Aldrich Potgieter, a South African teenager, created a massive lead over 18 holes and held off a late charge from Sam Bairstow to win the British Amateur on Saturday at Royal Lytham & St. Annes and book his spot in three majors.

On the 16th hole, the 17-year-old South African finished with a par.

Potgieter, a South African junior golfer who attends the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy, is the event’s second-youngest champion since it began in 1885. Only Italy’s Matteo Manassero, who won at the age of 16 in 2009, was younger.

He is also the third South African to win the Amateur Championship, following Jovan Rebula in 2018 at Royal Aberdeen and Bobby Cole in 1966 at Carnoustie.

With the win, he will compete in the British Open next month, as well as the Masters and the US Open the following year.
