He was named a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution after leaving the Fed. Bernanke supervised the Federal Reserve’s response to the late-2000s financial crisis as chairman, for which he was selected Time Person of the Year in 2009.
Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University and led the department of economics from 1996 until September 2002, when he took a leave of absence from the Federal Reserve.
Together with Douglas Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig, Bernanke was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022 “for work on banks and financial crises.”
Bernanke was born in Augusta, Georgia, and reared in Dillon, South Carolina, on East Jefferson Street. Philip, his father, was a pharmacist and part-time theater manager. Edna, his mother, was an elementary school teacher. Bernanke has two younger brothers and sisters. Seth, his brother, is an attorney in Charlotte, North Carolina. Sharon, his sister, is a long-time administrator at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
