Mr. Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a relative of President Akufo-Addo, has claimed that the government’s reliance on a bailout from the International Monetary Fund is due to the minority caucus in parliament.
“We had a substantial source of revenue generation that had been dormant for the previous six months. The point is that, sure, there were difficulties, but the administration devised plans to overcome those difficulties, and those policies were thwarted by the very parliament we have today “On Saturday, July 2nd, 2022, he told Joy FM in Accra, Ghana.
‘The Minority Leader was openly bragging and taking credit for thwarting the government’s ability to generate money,’ Mr Otchere-Darko claimed.
This (situation) could not have been saved by any Ghanaian government, the Danquah Institute’s founder claimed.
To him, “I think those are the things we need to focus on,” he added, “when you have an opposition party that believes nothing matters but political capitalisation of situations and can go to the public and say that: ‘Yes, praise us because we stopped the government from getting its way in raising revenue to solve the situation and problems facing the ordinary Ghanaian’.”
It took the minority caucus of the 8th hung parliament two months to finally enact the e-levy, which the administration proposed in the 2022 budget read in November 2021.
According to Mr. Otchere-Darko, barely 10% of the tax’s estimated revenue was collected, creating a massive hole in government coffers that must be filled soon.
