On September 27, 1981, in Otago, New Zealand, he was born. He is Stuart McCullum’s son.

McCullum is the only Kiwi player to have scored 2000 runs in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), two T20I hundreds, and the previous greatest run scorer in T20I cricket (apart from Martin Guptill).

With 302 runs against India on February 18, 2014, he became the first New Zealander to score a triple century in a Test.

In 2014, he became the first person from New Zealand to complete 1000 tests in a single year. With 1172 runs, Kane Williamson beat the record in 2015.

At the end of the southern summer on December 22, 2015, McCullum announced his retirement from international cricket, following in the footsteps of his brother, who had done the same earlier in the year.

He is the first captain to make a century in his final test, and he also has the most runs scored by a captain (170).
