He is the 29th district attorney of San Francisco and is a member of the Democratic Party.
He formerly worked as a San Francisco deputy public defender. He is a Yale Law School graduate who is married and has one child.

Chesa Boudin was the son of Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert. They were members of the Weather Underground, an anti-imperialist and anti-communist group.
Both were arrested and convicted of murder for their roles as getaway car drivers when Boudin was very young.
For the felony murders of two police officers and a security guard, his mother, Kathy Boudin, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and his father, David, was sentenced to 75 years in prison.
Chesa was then raised by Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in Chicago.
