Taking turns behind the wheel of the #18 Chevrolet with his brother JD, Gibbs made his NASCAR debut in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2000. His full-time racing career started in 2001 when he posted two top-five finishes. The following year, he finished 10th in the points standings. In 2003, he took over for Mike McLaughlin in the NASCAR Busch Series, where he finished second in the Rookie of the Year standings. Coy announced his retirement from racing at the end of the season.
