The daughter of nurse Rose Isabel (Ryan), a native of Plattsburgh, New York, and Italian American Amerigo Giuseppe Annucci, Ryan was born in New York City on October 16, 1927. In 1957, Ryan wed actor and active union member Leo Penn, who had been on the blacklist from the late 1940s until the late 1950s. Leo died in 1998, although the couple remained married for more than 40 years.
In the 1986 movie At Close Range, Ryan played the grandfather of the brothers along with her sons Sean and Chris. Eileen Ryan also makes a cameo in Sean’s film, The Crossing Guard. Ryan played Lorraine in Comes a Day (1953) and Evie in Sing Till Tomorrow (1953) on Broadway (1958).
