Filep Karma was born on the 14th of August, 1959 in Jayapura, Dutch New Guinea. He was born into a family of upper-class earners with his Dad a civil servant. Filep Karma decided he was one going show his convictions regardless of what price it came with when he and his family were subjected to a midnight raid by Indonesian soldiers during which his siblings were taken away. He would be arrested on the 1st of December, 2004 after he participated in a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of Papua Independence. This was of course seen as treason by the then-Indonesian government and he was handed a 15-year jail term out of which he served 11 and was released on 19th of December, 2015.

Filep Karma until death had a hobby of diving and this would lead to his ultimate ending. He was found dead on the 1st of November in a diving suit at Base-G spot, Jayapura over what is understood as a drowning incident.
