His criticism of Urdu literature drew on a variety of contemporary theoretical approaches, including stylistics, structuralism, post-structuralism, and eastern poetics.
Balochistan, British India’s town of Dukki, is where Narang was born (now Pakistan). Gopi’s passion for literature was sparked by his father, the poet and Persian and Sanskrit scholar Dharam Chand Narang.
The University of Delhi awarded Narang a master’s degree in Urdu, and the Ministry of Education provided him with a research scholarship so he could finish his Ph.D. in 1958.
Before entering Delhi University in 1961, where he was made a reader, Narang taught Urdu literature at St. Stephen’s College from 1957 to 1958.
He taught at the Universities of Minnesota and Oslo in addition to the University of Wisconsin between 1963 and 1968 as a visiting professor. In 1974, Narang began teaching at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi.
From 1986 to 1995, he returned to the University of Delhi. He was designated a professor emeritus by the institution in 2005.
