As Stuard was growing up, Grant Stuard assisted in caring for his four siblings while his father was in prison and his mother battled a drug addiction. Stuard spent four years as a student at the University of Houston, where he predominantly played linebacker but sometimes occasionally ran back.

Grant Stuard played in seven games during his rookie season of 2017 before missing four games and the 2017 Hawaii Bowl due to a damaged meniscus. In both of his tackles against Rice University, Grant Stuard received assistance. Stuard played 13 games and made 1 start in the 2018 campaign. With 11 special teams tackles, he topped the Houston Cougars football team in 2018. Grant Stuard later played running back as well.
