Author David Ireland, an Australian who was 94 years old and won three Miles Franklin medals in the 1970s, has passed away. His second book, The Unknown Industrial Prisoner (1971), for which he won his first Miles Award, is the one for which he is best remembered.
He continued to write and publish books, including The Glass Canoe, A Woman of the Future (1980, The Age Book of the Year), The Chosen, and his final work, The World Repair Video Game (2015).
The Chosen was followed by a protracted pause. The World Repair Video Game was reviewed by author Malcolm Knox, who commented that Ireland, once known as “the behemoth of literature,” had transformed into “the unpublished struggler, creator of phantom novels, unheard, unreceived, unacknowledged, and still – most crucially – undeterred.” According to his appraisal of the book, it was “a lovely novel of ideas in the purest, simplest language, a work of immense scope hidden inside the meandering days of a tranquil dog owner repairing a coastal wildness.” He was the recipient of three Miles Franklin Awards in 1971, 1976, and 1979.
