Cassidy was a defenseman who played for the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 1982 to 1985 and was selected 18th overall in the first round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Black Hawks.
In 1982–83, Cassidy had his best OHL season, scoring 25 goals and 86 assists for 111 points. Under Brian Kilrea’s coaching, he scored 12 points to win the Memorial Cup in 1984.
He made his NHL debut with the Chicago Black Hawks in March 1984, when he was 19 years old.
Between 1984 and 1988, he had three knee surgeries, including a major ACL reconstruction.
