In January 2014, Joe Mixon committed to play college football for the University of Oklahoma. He ultimately chose Oklahoma over Alabama, California, Wisconsin, and UCLA after receiving 47 offers. Mixon attended and played college football for the University of Oklahoma from 2014 to 2016.
Joe Mixon was prohibited from participating for the Oklahoma football team in 2014 after being charged with a minor assault in October of that year. In 2015, Mixon was a redshirt freshman and played in all 12 games, starting three of them.
