Judith Margaret Brown (born 9 July 1944) is a British historian, academic, and Anglican priest specializing in modern South Asian history. Judith was the Beit Professor of Commonwealth History and a Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1990 to 2011. Judith previously taught at the University of Manchester and received her Ph.D. from Girton College, Cambridge. Brown was born in India but educated in the United Kingdom. Brown left the classroom in 2011.
Before women could be ordained in the Anglican Communion, Brown felt the call to ordination when she was a young girl. Brown received her education at Ripon College Cuddesdon, and in 2009 and 2010, she was ordained as a deacon and a priest in the Church of England. Brown performed her curacy at St. Frideswide’s Church in Osney, in the Diocese of Oxford, from 2009 to 2010. She has served as an associate priest at St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Oxford since 2014. As the institution’s first female chaplain, she served as Brasenose College’s interim chaplain in 2017.
