He was born in Auchi, a town in Nigeria’s Edo State. Kamaru’s father was a Nigerian Army major, while his mother was a teacher. He is the firstborn child of three brothers: Kamaru (himself), Kashetu, and Mohammed.
The Nigerian Nightmare, as he is colloquially known, presently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight division (UFC). Usman has had considerable success in the UFC, having been named No. 1 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings on September 27th, 2021.
Usman began wrestling as a student at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. Usman received the moniker “Marty” when he joined the squad since his wrestling coach at the time couldn’t pronounce his first name, Kamarudeen, and it lasted with him throughout his amateur wrestling career.
Usman wrestled alongside Jon Jones at the senior national competition before leaving for college after compiling a 53-3 record as a senior and placing third at the Texas state championships.
