LeRoy Melvin Radabaugh, also known as Roy, was born on January 8, 1910, in Long Beach, California. He was the second of Ralph and Fay Radabaugh’s five children. The Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918 claimed the life of his father. For the sake of the family’s financial situation, Roy delivered the morning newspapers with sincerity. He received a scholarship to the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles as a teenager thanks to his artistic talent. He kept up his part-time jobs as a maintenance worker, a custodian, and a soda jerk. He was commissioned to work as an “artist to the stars” for a while because of the quality of his oil painting and mask-making skills.

His distinguished clientele included actresses like Greta Garbo and Colleen Moore, as well as film giants like Anna Q. Nilsson, Tallulah Bankhead, Beatrice Lillie, Joan Crawford, and the notoriously private Greta. His long-simmering passion to act suddenly flared into flame, and he was soon able to establish his own studio in Hollywood and was well on his way to becoming an accomplished artist.
