Poitier’s childhood was marked by poverty and difficulty, as his parents were farmers and he was the youngest of eight siblings. At the age of 15, he moved to the United States to live with his older brother in Miami.

After serving briefly in the U.S. Army, he moved to New York City and began working as a dishwasher, janitor, and other odd jobs. In 1946, Poitier had his first acting role in the Broadway production of “Lysistrata,” and he continued to work in theater through the 1950s.

He made his film debut in 1950 in “No Way Out,” and went on to appear in a number of notable films, including “Blackboard Jungle,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and “In the Heat of the Night.”
