Travis Kelce exudes self-assuredness both in and out of the football arena, though the Kansas City Chiefs’ standout player reveals to PEOPLE that his self-esteem faced challenges during his academic years.

At the age of 33, Kelce acknowledges, “To be honest, my confidence was largely shaped by sports. Academically, I wasn’t the strongest when it came to subjects like reading and math.”

However, the two-time Super Bowl champion emphasizes that he thrived in the realms of sports, whether on the field or the court. These successes contributed significantly to his self-assurance and self-identity, as Kelce explains, “My confidence in who I am truly blossomed through my performances on the field or in sports like football, basketball, or baseball. Stepping onto the field or into an event where I knew I had prowess, like football, served as a powerful source of motivation.”

A decade in the NFL has only solidified Kelce’s self-belief, and he shares, “Certainly, my confidence has continued to grow alongside my career’s achievements, without question,” as he conveyed to PEOPLE.

His confidence played a pivotal role in securing him a prominent position in DIRECTV’s “Overly Direct Sportsperson” campaign, timed ahead of the NFL season’s kickoff on Thursday.

Kelce readily acknowledges that he’s the ideal candidate for this role, affirming, “I would say that on the football field, I’m incredibly straightforward and to the point, without a doubt. Especially as a leader, I ensure that everyone is on the same page.”

Throughout the campaign, Kelce takes a stand against fans’ subpar sports-watching habits, vocally critiquing them. He urges everyone to explore DIRECTV’s Sports Central feature, emphasizing it as “the ultimate football package for the football season.”

Kelce openly admits he’s a “sports fanatic,” sharing with PEOPLE, “I absolutely love tuning into ESPN or watching NHL games. I’ll always catch an MLB game; I’m a devoted Cleveland Guardians fan. And, of course, the NBA offers some of the most entertaining viewing. So my interests are quite diverse; you’ll find me watching all sorts of sports.”

When he isn’t immersing himself in sports, Kelce reveals his penchant for binge-watching, akin to the average person. He recently devoured the last season of “Ted Lasso,” stating, “Jason Sudeikis is one of my favorites.” He also notes that Sudeikis and his family are ardent Kansas City Chiefs supporters, occasionally attending games.

Regardless of whether he’s watching a game or a captivating series, Kelce discloses that his preferred options for a viewing party spread are straightforward. “I mean, it’s a given that wings and football are an unbeatable combination. Pizza is another go-to; I’m quite the pizza enthusiast. Aside from that, you can never go wrong with some delectable Kansas City barbecue.”
