As a member of parliament and as a mayor, Georgina Beyer was the first openly transgender person in history. She was born in November 1957, and on March 6, 2023, she went away.

Georgina served in the House of Commons for more than seven years before leaving in February 2007. She accomplished everything she set out to do, including seeing to it that the Prostitution Reform and Civil Unions Acts were approved as well as seeing to it that the hospital in Masterton survived and thrived as well as bringing back government services to the outlying Wairarapa. As a result, she is now free to explore new challenges.

Beyer received the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2020 as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of her support for LGBTIQA+ rights. A seat in the Wairarapa constituency was gained by the late lawmaker in 1999. She presided over the Social Services and Law & Order Select Committees.

She held the office of mayor of Carterton before being re-elected to it in 1995 with a 48% majority and in 1998 with a 90% majority. Due to her parliamentary duties, Beyer reluctantly resigned from her position as mayor in March 2000.
