Colm Murphy was born on August 18, 1952, in the town of Dundalk in County Louth, Ireland. He grew up in a working-class family and developed a keen interest in Irish republican politics at an early age.
Murphy was arrested and charged with involvement in the IRA’s bombing of a British army barracks in Germany, in 1985. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
While incarcerated, he continued to play a leadership role in the IRA and became a powerful symbol of resistance for many Irish republicans. After his release from prison in 1999, Murphy continued to be active in republican politics.
He became a vocal critic of the Good Friday Agreement, a peace deal signed between the British and Irish governments in 1998 that brought an end to the Troubles. Murphy argued that the agreement did not go far enough in addressing the root causes of the conflict and that it failed to deliver true independence for Ireland.
