Fred Ward, a 79-year-old veteran character actor best known for roles in The Right Stuff, Tremors, and Short Cuts, has died. Ward died on May 8, according to his representative at the New York Post.

According to the statement, Ward requested that donations be made to the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center.

 

Ward, who was born in San Diego, served in the Air Force before deciding to pursue a career as an actor. After struggling to find work, he worked as a lumberjack, sailor, and boxer before resuming his acting career in Italy, where he had an early role in a 1974 Roberto Rossellini television film about Descartes.

When he returned to the United States, he was cast as bank robber John Anglin, Clint Eastwood’s fellow escapee in Escape from Alcatraz.

More high-profile roles followed, including murderous corporal Reece in Southern Comfort, a Vietnam vet in Uncommon Valor, and flawed astronaut Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff.
