Redmond tore his hamstring in the 400-meter semi-final at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, but Redmond continued the race limping and managed to complete a full lap of the track while receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Although Redmond was disqualified and listed as “Did Not Finish” because of the outside assistance he received to finish the race, the incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee’s “Celebrate Humanity” videos and being used in Visa advertisements as an illustration of the Olympic spirit, as well as being featured in Nike’s “Courage” commercials in 2008.
