Upon his graduation from Christian Brothers School, he obtained a career as a secretary in a magistrate’s office. He met Diane Jansen at the time, with whom he temporarily had an affair. Sharyn, their daughter, was born in 1974.

Before he became famous, he worked as a social worker. O’Grady was gay, but before he became famous, he married a lady and had a daughter named Sharon O’Grady (born on 16 May 1974).

In the 2008 Birthday Honours, O’Grady was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to entertainment.
