Coy Gibbs was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 2004 to 2006, finishing his career as the Washington Redskins’ offensive quality control coach. His father is Joe Gibbs, a five-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer. During his three years as a coach, his teams went 21-27-0 overall. When Gibbs was competing for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Truck Series at Martinsville Speedway in 2002, Kevin Harvick of Richard Childress Racing made fleeting contact with Gibbs. After a few laps, Harvick made contact with Gibbs during a restart, sending him spinning and ending his chances of winning the race.

At the time, Gibbs was running third and believed he could have won the race. NASCAR reviewed Harvick’s radio comments and parked him for the rest of the weekend, fining him $35,000 for intentionally wrecking Gibbs. NASCAR determined that Harvick had violated his probation for an altercation with Greg Biffle a month before.
