From 14 August 1959 to 1 November 2022, Filep Jacob Semuel Karma, a supporter of West Papuan independence, lived.
Filep Karma assisted in hoisting the Morning Star flag during a ceremony in Jayapura on December 1, 2004, which led to a treason conviction and a fifteen-year prison sentence.
After receiving a false report that two of Filep Karma’s relatives from Biak were actually his uncles Sam and Jan Pieter Karma, colonels for OPM, the Indonesian military invaded Filep Karma’s home at midnight and destroyed the family’s belongings. This encounter left a deep mark on Filep Karma.
He asserted that because he had visited the day before the raid, Fritz Karma, a TNI informant and member of the Polri, was assumed to be the informant.

After finishing his undergraduate studies at Solo’s Sebelas Maret University in Java, he joined his father in the government.
In order to spend a year studying at the Asian Institute of Management, Filep Karma travelled to Manila in 1997.
