The all-American town of Hyannis, MA, is home to the historic Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod. This historical gem was once home to the beloved and iconic United States president John F. Kennedy. In 2012, the main house was donated by the Kennedy family to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. On the grounds are an enclosed swimming pool, tennis court, a four-car garage, and two guest houses. As of 2020, Robert Kennedy’s widow Ethel lives in their home adjacent to the main house.
Back in time, Boston-based Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., the family’s patriarch, bought the house in 1933 for use as a winter retreat for his family, including his wife Rose and their offspring.
Kennedy Sr. made the house his legal residence in 1941 and often vacationed alone there, frequently swimming in the pool, according to his biographers. Before his election to the presidency, John Kennedy is said to have written his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Profiles in Courage, at the house while recovering from back surgery in 1956.
