Artis Leon Ivey Jr., better known by his stage name Coolio, was an American rapper, actor, and record producer who lived from August 1, 1963, until September 28, 2022.
Artis Leon Ivey Jr., who was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, later lived in Compton, California. After graduating from Compton Community College, he worked in jobs such as security at the Los Angeles International Airport and volunteer firefighting.
In the middle to end of the 1990s, Coolio rose to fame with the publication of his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1996). (1997). He became well known for the singles “Fantastic Voyage” (1994), “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” (1996, and “C U When U Get There”).
He achieved particular fame by penning the 1996 Nickelodeon television series Kenan & Kel’s opening theme song, “Aw, Here It Goes!”
Coolio has been independently releasing CDs since 1996. He had culinary training as well, and a cookbook and the internet series Cookin’ with Coolio were both written about him. Ivey first rose to fame when he joined WC and Crazy Toones to form the Gangsta rap group WC and the Maad Circle.
Why Is Coolio Named Coolio?
Coolio was originally intended to be a pejorative nickname. According to The Mirror, he received the moniker “Coolio Iglesias” after winning a singing contest by performing a song by Julio Iglesias.
