Yusra Mardini as a professional swimmer competed in the 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley, and 400-meter freestyle events at the 2012 World Swimming Championships.
Yusra Mardini made the decision to leave Syria with her sister Sarah in August 2015 when the Syrian Civil War damaged her home. They crossed into Turkey from Lebanon and took a boat with 18 other refugees to enter Greece illegally. They later ended up in Berlin.
In June 2016, Yusra Mardini was chosen to represent a small group of Refugee Olympic Athletes under the Olympic flag. Mardini carried the flag of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team during the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she also participated.
