William H. Macy Remembers Late Costar Philip Seymour Hoffman: ‘I Now See That He Was in Pain’

William H. Macy is recollecting Philip Seymour Hoffman as “the best of us.” In a new meeting with Vulture distributed to pay tribute to Monday’s 25th commemoration of the entertainers’ film Boogie Evenings, Macy pondered his impression of Hoffman as both an entertainer and an individual.

“He was awesome of us; he was rarely terrible,” said the Improper entertainer, 72. “Furthermore, I couldn’t say whether it’s simply thinking back, yet I presently see that he was in torment.

I think the heaviness of living was heavier on Phil than it is on others.”

Macy — who later featured with Hoffman again in Magnolia (1999) and State and Fundamental (2000) — was on a board at the Sundance Film Celebration together on the side of the pair’s last film, where he said Hoffman “conflicted” with Macy’s viewpoint that “you don’t need to experience the person. That is not acting, it’s psychological sickness.”

“He said, ‘No, I believe there’s things you can do to get into the world. Anything that’s going on, you must track down it in yourself, and I think you need to lower yourself into its universe,’ ” Macy said of Hoffman, who died from a medication glut at 46 years old in February 2014. Macy let Hoffman know that anything he does “‘is f- – – ing splendid constantly,’ ” to which the last option answered, “‘Thank you, and I figure you do it as well, paying little mind to what you express,’ ” as per Macy.

“Yet, it was a little window into how profoundly he felt stuff,” Macy said.

The entertainer proceeded to take note of a particular “tragic” second in Boogie Evenings, when Hoffman’s personality Scotty J. “appears in those garments that are too little and he’s holding the clipboard carefully shrouded and he’s biting on the pencil when he attempts to play with Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg).”

“Furthermore, I at absolutely no point ever saw him do that person in the future. Starting there on, he played a lot more grounded characters.

Furthermore, I don’t believe there’s anything he was unable to do,” Macy said.
